We chose to upgrade for remote printing, some monitoring capabilities, and to add LMI Central which allows me to share remote access to other users.Īs a one-man shop, LMI has allowed me to not piece meal other RDP and VPN products together to get remote access for me, and then remote access for end users. Are there other free alternatives, yes? I could, and HAVE managed the network with LMI Free.

That's a heck of a lot cheaper than a second body's wages as it allows me to be in many places at once. LMI Pro can get pricey, but for a small IT shop with just me, it's worth every penny. I actually feel much more secure over my LMI connections than PPTP connections. Https:/ / / welcome/ documentation/ EN/ pdf/ common/ LogMeIn_SecurityWhitepaper.pdf

However, for a business, it just is to expensive when you have an in-house IT guy. LMI is great for a home user, it is great for doing some things like rescue. I'm pretty sure their website indicated you didn't need to tweak port fwd'ing on the fw to get through, but I could've read that wrong. I'm gonna have to try Jump to see how she works. LMI is cheap, quick, easy, and secure enough for most places. Granted, that's always been using old school PPTP.Īs for resources, it's just me and 100+ users at the day job and 10-15 personal clients. The encryption overhead always seems to kill any available bandwidth for doing anything. My experiences w/ VPN have never been good. LMI logs the username and IP address of any sessions, I pull these and review monthly. With LMI, you still need to get into each individual machine after getting into the account. As well depending on the environment you may need to pay someone to come in.Ĭompromise the VPN and you've got the same thing. The resources involved are technical know how and time. That being said, not everyone has the resources to develop a free VPN solution with free 2 factor and RDP. This in contrast to a VPN with 2 factor and an RDP session. The best solution will always be VPN/RDP, with LMI I just need to compromize your LMI account and I own your network.
